Author Influences 19 July 2017

“…I read Sarah Hilary’s Someone Else’s Skin while writing my new novel and I must say it made me raise my game. It’s a superb book and I love her protagonist DI Marnie Rome. Most of the time it’s work by the likes of Denis Johnson, Tobias Wolff and Chuck Palahniuk, or relatively new kids on the block like Donald Ray Pollock and Frank Bill…”

Interview: With Sheenagh Pugh 1st June 2017

Ugly Bus“…As for the Ugly Bus characters, the only one I’ve given serious consideration to returning to is the female character and how she navigates her life and career after those terrible events. That novel was a nightmare to write… And then it was released to absolutely no fanfare and pretty much disappeared, which was heart-breaking. So I have mixed feelings about it – while I’m not sure I want to write another ninety thousand words following the same flawed/awful coppers, I’m hugely proud of the book itself: the effort it took to write, the characters and story and that final kicker that everyone gasped about…”

Guest Post: What is a Criminal 19 January 2017

criminal“…The truth is you’re never too far from the edge. It would only take one or two life-changing events to nudge you towards doing something criminal. Losing your job, for example. No money coming in, your kids starving, so you shoplift food and are caught. Your wife leaves you for another man, and you can’t contain your rage, and you attack them both. I’ve seen people lose it for the most mundane of reasons…”

Interview: Author In The Spotlight 9 January 2017

manuscripts“…I stopped writing when I joined the cops. It kind of just fell away amongst the shift work and case file preparation and occasionally trying to sleep. But after ten or so years in policing I’d had enough of being punched and sworn at so started digging my escape tunnel. Signed up for writing groups and courses, won some short story competitions, and wrote three or four novels that were rejected by every publisher in the universe…”

Interview: Best of Three 9 December 2016

books“…One of the best crime and mystery novels I’ve read in terms of pacing, plot and sheer page-turning, nail-biting thrills, and it depicts the fragility of relationships – siblings, spouses, friends, and how money can affect them – in a chilling way…”

Interviewed 1 December 2016

ash and bones“…My first two novels were self-contained, with a clear beginning, middle and end for both. With a series it’s not just the important things  – plot, twists, theme, if you have one – that you have to make work, there are character arcs and backstories that you need to create and sustain, ensuring they all make sense and ring true as you move through each novel. I’ve recently been doing redrafts for the second in the series, and my editor had to remind me that people might pick up the book having not read ‘Ash and Bones’ so wouldn’t have a clue what was happening. It meant a lot of rewriting in order to bring people up to speed very quickly. This made my head hurt a little bit…”

Interviewed 25 November 2016

curry“…I will eat anything. Literally. Inside me there is a morbidly obese man fighting to get out. I do love Thai, Japanese, or a good plate of Mexican. And I live in Portugal, where their traditional dishes – look up the artery-clogger that is Francesinha – are lovely. But I’m going to go with Indian. Curry is the food of champions, and the hotter the better…”
